When hearing or reading a sentence we group the words into meaningful phrases by a process called parsing. Parsing has a big influence on how we understand sentences.
Sometimes we come across sentences that seem ambiguous in meaning due to the way we parsed them. In the example "Cast iron sinks quickly rust" at first we may think we're talking about 'quickly sinking iron', however when we finish the sentence we know that we're actually referring to a kitchen appliance.
There are two theories that try to explain the way parsing works- the syntax first approach and the interactionist approach.
The syntax first approach states that parsing is based on syntax. In other words, people group words into phrases and derive the meaning of sentences based on the grammatical structure. A principle that this approach emphasizes is late closure (every subsequent word a person encounters is added to the phrase. So each new word adds to the meaning of the phrase).
The interactionist approach states that both syntax (grammar) and semantics (meanings of words) influence the parsing mechanism.
