Re: What are the basic claims of Gibson's ecological approach to perception?
Gibson basically claimed that the environment allows actions to the organism. What this means is that, if you want to explain a behaviour, you must first study the environment. This created the analysis of information that connects the organism to the environment. His theory was more information-based rather than sensation-based hence he claimed that perception is based on information and not on sensation.

Re: What are the basic claims of Gibson's ecological approach to perception?
Gibson rejects modern theories of perception that attempt to explain how information from the environment is picked up by the senses. He denies inportance to the underlying mental and neurobiological mechanisms that involve perception and are nowadays mainly investigated. Instead he proposes, in line with Skinner's views, that all behavior is lawful and thus, is reinforced and can be observed. Hence, the study of perception, in his opinion, should focus on how the individual acts and reacts in his or her environment.
