Re: Why is it difficult to explain how people segment speech into words?
It's difficult to explain how people segment speech into words because peoples' speech differs widely in terms of pronunciation and speed. There is not indication as to where one word ends and where another one starts.
Analyzing sound energy does not explain anything either since the record gives no indication of how words are segmented.
An experiment done by Irwin Pollack makes the matter even more difficult to understand. He recorded casual conversations and then presented the speakers with individual words they had said (he segmented the speech into words)and it turned out that they could not understand half of them. But they had to understand all the individual words when they were saying them, so as I said, this experiment only makes the matter more complicated.
