Re: What are the main differences between semantic and episodic memory?
Explicit memory also called the conscious or declarative memory consists of episodic memory and semantic memory.
Episodic memory: it's a memory for personal experiences. For example remembering that one was suppose to study for a cognitive exam with a person with whom he/she has already arranged a meeting, while talking to a friend and being asked to go out for a coffee shows that he/she is experiencing an episodic memory. The person is not going to go out for a coffee beacue the person will remember that he/she has to study for a cognitive exam.
Semantic memory: it's the stored knowledge and memory for facts. For example while already studying for the exam the person already knows/remembers some general facts about perception/attention etc. that he/she has learned during the lecture. In this case the person is experiencing a semantic memory.
