Baddeley's revised working memory model simply contains the original three components and the added episodic buffer.
Central executive-> Phonological loop, Episodic buffer, Visuospatial sketch pad ---> LONG TERM MEMORY
The episodic buffer stores information (providing extra capacity) and as can be seen is also connected to Long-term memory. In other words the role of episodic buffer is ''that it represents a way of increasing storage capacity and communicating with LTM''.
It simply represents how our capacity of working memory can be increased by chunking (for example remembering a phone number not as whole 883265987 but rather in chunks 883-265-987) and also the interchange of information between working memory and LTM as mentioned before.

The episodic buffer explains things that that the previous model of working memory couldn't explain (model that did not include the episodic buffer). First of all it can store information and therefore increase the capacity of working memory. Second of all it connects to the long-term memory allowing access of it.
