Re: What is a problem?
''A problem occurs when there is an obstacle between a present state and a goal state and it is not immediately obvious how to get around the obstacle''. Therefore we can say that a problem is something that is difficult and the solution is not so obvious; at least at the beginning of trying to solve it.
If for example a student is instructed to close a window and is given two alternatives on how to do it exactly then one can say that this is not a problem that needs to be solved. However if the same student is asked to close the same window without being given any instructions before and while trying to close the window finds out that it is broken and it's hard for him/her to close it; then this can be said to be a problem that needs a solution.
There are two main types of problems:
1.Well defined- such as mathematical excersises or physics etc. These problems usually have a correct answer and follow a certain procedure/rules that will be helpful in coming up with a solution.
2.Il defined-not very straigh forward; problems such as picking a career/job/university etc. They do not follow any procedures and are usually hard to solve. There is not just one correct answer to these problems.
