''Representations that are like realistic pictures that resemble an object, so that part of the representation correspond to parts of the object are called depictive representations''. Mental representation therefore can be said to be iconic (has a form of images).
To understand it better it is good to look back at the Island used in Kosslyn et al.'s (1978) image-scanning experiment in which participants mentally travelled between various locations on the island. It has been found that scanning time increases as the distance between two points on an image increases, and it is because ''participants are responding to Kosslyn's tasks based on what they know about what usually happens when they are looking at a real scene''.
From this we can see that it has been suggested that mental representation is iconic, as in this case participants while mentally travelling between various locations had an image of ''the real scene'' in their mind, that helped them to complete the task.
