Re: What is binocular disparity. Why is binocular disparity useful in studying visual consciousness?
Binocular disparity is the slight difference in visual images reaching the two eyes. A close object produces greater binocular disparity than a distant one, as you can verify by covering first one eye then the other. Nearby objects will appear to jump as you switch from one eye to the other, showing that different images are reaching each eye. More distant objects will not appear to change position as much. The brain uses binocular disparity to extract depth information from the two-dimensional retinal images in stereopsis.

Binocular disparity is a perceptual cue which involves the usage of separation between the two eyes to essentially examine the distance of objects. If the brain receives 2 noncomplementary messages, the brain sents only one image to the consciousness however, the neurons supporting the experienced image grows weak and gives away the other competing image.
