Re: What is the role of Medial Temporal Cortex in long term memory processes?
As we know, the Medial Temporal Lobe is important for working memory. If we analyze it's specific parts we will see that:
1) Hippocampus is crucial for forming new long term memories. (We know this from the case of HM, who lost his ability to form new memories (anterograde amnesia) and also much of his old memory (retrograde amnesia) after his hippocampus was removed) Also it's important for remembering the context within which an object appears.
2) Perirhinal cortex - important for recognition memory: proves that that happens during encoding affects the chances that memory will occur during retrieval (it's activity is greater for the remembered words that for a forgotten words [Lila Davachi, 2003])
3) Parahippocampal area - important for remembering spatial information
4) Amygdala - important for emotional memory
