Proactive interference happens when information learned previously interferes with learning new information while retroactive interference refers to when more recent learning interferes with memory for something that took place in the past.

Proactive interference is when knowledge or memories from long ago interfere with recall of later acquired knowledge or memories. Retroactive interference is when newly acquired knowledge or memories interfere with recall of knowledge or memories from before the acquisition.
