They created a 75 second film, in which two teams (on dressed in white, one dressed in black) are shown. The team in white is passing a basketball around, whereas the team in black is not. Participants were told to count the number of passes made by the team in white. After about 45 seconds, a person in a gorilla suit walks through the scene for roughly 5 seconds. 46% of the participants, questioned after watching the video, stated they did not notice the gorilla passing through.
This demostrates, that when people are attending to a specific sequence of events (nr. of passes), they may happen to not notice other, obvious events occuring simultaneously. This phenomenon is known as inattentional blindness.
